You’ve probably heard of the Scales of Training, also know as the German Training Scale, but do you know what they are? And, more importantly, do you know why and how they should be applied?
Lunging training over poles and Cavaletti is a particularly worthwhile exercise: your horse is stimulated to push off with more intent, ideally with the movement running through the whole body, going over the back and raising the chest.
If all has gone to plan in your schooling, a horse often just picks up the flying changes quite easily when the canter is balanced and strong enough to ask for them.
If you’re lunging instead of riding once a week or so, this short amount of time can be really beneficial for strengthening and suppling your horse, as well as building fitness.
